A simple example of a pragmatic phrase is a sentence such as “I have two sons.” While the speaker of this sentence may have more than two sons, the meaning of the phrase will be altered by the question asked before it. Similarly, the meaning of “I have two daughters” can be completely changed by the preceding question of “Do you have any children?”

Pragmatism gained popularity in the United States during the late nineteenth century. Some pragmatists consider the concept of “pronouns” to be a kind of linguistics. The pragmatists have also applied this principle to the theory of speech acts. The term “pronoun” has many of the same objectives as pragmatics. It describes the way in which a speaker uses the pronoun “you” in everyday language. For example, “you” is an important pronoun, in which the speaker merely utters a word, but is actually performing an action.
